WINGS ACROSS WESTMORELAND
Westmoreland Cultural Trust is spreading its wings!
In line with its mission, Westmoreland Cultural Trust is bringing art and awareness to cities across the county in the new art initiative, Wings Across Westmoreland.
Westmoreland Cultural Trust is a proud leader and supporter of local artists and musicians. In 2016, the Trust announced its Incubator for the Arts, a place to foster the work of local artists and take their craft to the next level. In the spring of 2018, WCT announced its Art in the Alley initiative which has turned a dark and desolate alley next to The Palace Theatre courtyard into a vibrant canvas and interactive public art project for the community to enjoy. The alley has become a destination spot in downtown Greensburg.
One of the Trust’s most notable pieces of artwork in the alley is a large set of metal wings designed by Incubator artist Patrick Mahoney. The wings were inspired by places and memories in Greensburg including the courthouse, The Palace Theatre and other distinctive downtown sites. They have been a backdrop for countless selfies, senior photos and wedding photographs. This interaction and community engagement inspired us to expand the initiative beyond Greensburg and into other cities, making it countywide.
Locations all over Westmoreland County will be receiving their own pair of wings with imagery that makes each place special. We have asked the community to get involved by sending us landmarks and items that they wish to see in their set of wings. The excitement and participation have already proved the success of this project.
